FIRST Global Challenge (The Olympics of Robotics)
Main Idea: This is the «Olympics» of robotics, where each country is represented by one team of high school students. The main goal is not to defeat other countries, but to jointly solve a global problem.
What makes it special?
- Olympic Format: The competition is held in a new country every year. Teams from all over the world (more than 190 countries) gather to present their solutions.
- Global Theme: Each year, one of the 14 «Grand Challenges of Engineering» is selected (for example, providing access to clean water, sustainable energy, or improving medicine). The entire game on the field is built around this theme.
- Coopetition: This term is a hybrid of «Cooperation» and «Competition.» In random alliances, teams that were just rivals must work together to achieve a common goal. The focus shifts from «I won» to «we solved the problem together.»
What are the robot’s tasks? The robot (which teams assemble from a standard kit) must perform tasks that symbolize the solution to the global problem:
- Collecting and sorting «polluted» balls (simulating cleaning the ocean of plastic).
- Launching «satellites» or «solar panels» (simulating energy solutions).
- Transporting «medicines» to hard-to-reach areas.
Goal: To raise a new generation of leaders in science and technology (STEM) and show them that international cooperation and the exchange of ideas are the key to solving major world problems.
