Artificial Intelligence: The Robot’s Brain

1. What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Briefly: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the ability of a computer system to mimic human cognitive functions: learning, analyzing information, making decisions, and solving problems.

Unlike a standard program that strictly follows pre-written «rigid» instructions (for example, «IF A, THEN DO B»), an AI system can independently find patterns and make decisions in situations that were not explicitly programmed into it.

For robotics, AI is not just another function. It is its «brain,» which transforms «hardware» (a cyber-physical system) from a simple mechanism into an autonomous assistant.

2. How does AI «think»? The Magic of Machine Learning (ML)

Modern AI almost always works based on Machine Learning (ML). This is the main breakthrough of recent decades.

The essence of ML is simple: instead of a programmer writing thousands of rules, they «feed» the system thousands of examples. The system analyzes these examples (data) itself and deduces patterns.

  • Example: To teach AI to distinguish a cat from a dog, we don’t write code like: «IF it has whiskers AND pointy ears, THEN it is a cat.»
  • Instead: We show the system 100,000 photos labeled «cat» and 100,000 labeled «dog.» The system itself finds thousands of tiny patterns in the pixels that distinguish one from the other.

3. Deep Learning: Creating «Neural Networks»

When data becomes very abundant and tasks become very complex (for example, recognizing speech or analyzing a medical scan), Deep Learning comes to the rescue.

This is a special type of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks — mathematical models inspired (very simply) by the structure of the human brain. They consist of many layers of «neurons,» where each layer is responsible for recognizing increasingly complex things.

  • Example (face recognition):
    • Layer 1: Finds simple edges and lines.
    • Layer 2: Assembles lines into simple shapes (eye, nose).
    • Layer 3: Assembles shapes into a whole face and recognizes it.

It is neural networks that today drive self-driving cars, generate images (Midjourney, DALL-E), and answer our questions (like I am right now).

4. Why does a robot need AI? (Key Tasks)

In robotics, AI plays four key roles:

  • Perception (Computer Vision): These are the robot’s «eyes.» AI allows the camera not just to «see» pixels, but to understand exactly what it sees: a person, an obstacle, a necessary part on a conveyor belt, road markings.
  • Decision Making (Logic): This is «consciousness.» Having received data from sensors (e.g., «I see a wall» and «I hear a command»), AI decides what to do next. Example: a delivery robot decides how to drive around a suddenly appearing pedestrian and update its route.
  • Interaction (Natural Language Processing, NLP): These are «ears» and «voice.» AI allows the robot to understand human speech (even with an accent) and respond with meaningful phrases, not just «BEEP-BOOP.»
  • Adaptation (Reinforcement Learning): This is «experience.» A robot can learn from its mistakes. Example: a robotic arm tries to pick up an object. It fails. It tries to pick it up differently, and it succeeds. AI «remembers» the successful action and will use it in the future.

5. Two Types of AI: Reality vs. Movies

It is important to distinguish between two concepts:

  1. Weak AI (ANI — Artificial Narrow Intelligence): This is what we have today. This AI is incredibly good, but only at one narrow task. An AI that plays chess cannot drive a car. An AI that recognizes speech cannot make a medical diagnosis.
  2. Strong AI (AGI — Artificial General Intelligence): This is «that» AI from science fiction (C-3PO, Skynet, HAL 9000). This is a hypothetical intellect that is not inferior to a human in any intellectual task. Such AI does not exist at the moment.

Conclusion: Artificial Intelligence is a technology that gives robots the ability to «see,» «think,» and «learn.» Without AI, a robot is just a mechanism; with AI, it is an autonomous system capable of solving complex problems in an unpredictable real world.
